Last week, The Nature Conservancy staff and volunteers continued their work at our Mink River Preserve to control the invasive shrub, autumn olive. Throughout upland areas of the preserve this species has thrived, and many of you know that we have several workdays each year focused on autumn olive. The good news is that we've made a lot of progress. The bad news...well, as you can imagine, there's still more out there to do. We continue to work specifically on our Sutter and RBH Quarry tracts off of Mink River Road. Each year we push further into this area tackling autumn olive. Previously treated portions of these tracts look great - with much lower density of the shrub and fewer and fewer staff and volunteer hours invested each year.
We've now moved into areas that contain some of the largest, happiest autumn olive that we've found here. The difference as we spend just a morning working within these areas is undeniable. We've included a few pictures below of our progress during our most recent workday and our summer employee, Tim. Unfortunately, this was Tim's last day working with TNC as his seasonal position wrapped up. It was great to have his help this summer and we wish him all the best as he begins work full-time with the Wisconsin DNR.
Our next autumn olive workday will be October 2, 2019 from 9:00am-12:00pm at this same location. See the home page of our website for details. To learn more about the invasive shrub autumn olive, visit https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/Invasives/fact/AutumnOlive.html.
